ABOUT DEVON REX
A brief overview of the Devons history
The Devon Rex is a comparatively new breed of cat. It was 'discovered' in 1960 in the county of Devon, England. The Devon Rex
originates from a stray curly coated male who lived near a disused mine near Buckfast. He mated with
another stray, a tortie and white cat, who was also living 'rough'. The tortie was befriended by a lady who
lived close by, Miss Beryl Cox. Miss Cox took care of the pregnant tortie and white, and in amongst the
litter that she gave birth to was a curly coated male kitten. She named him Kirlee and kept him for her
pet.
At first it was thought that Kirlee possibly was related to the Cornish rex who had been around for
approximately ten years prior to this, but it was later established that Kirlee carried a new rex gene and
was indeed a new type. The Devon rex had arrived! But it took a lot of patience and outcrossing to get the
breed established. Today, Devons are bred in most parts of the world. There are some subtle regional
variances in terms of the emphasis or appearance qualities that breeders are attempting to achieve. All Devons should be able
to trace their ancestry back to Kirlee.
A brief description of Kirlees appearance
As mentioned above, his coat was curly and mole-grey in colour. He looked like a little pixie due to his wide cheeks, short face,
and huge ears looking like bat wings. His ears were low-set and were covered with tufts of hair on the back creating an
‘earmuff’ like effect.
Devon Rex appearance and personality The Devon Rex is a breed of cat with a most unique appearance. Some of the very interesting and distinctive features of this breed are the large 'pixie' like ears, the short wavy and velvet like coat, short crinkly whiskers, and for some, the wrinkly foreheads. Devon Rex are a fine to medium build, small cat. They usually have a slim profile which has led some to describe them as a 'designer cat'. Their clean line presents an illusionary fragile quality to the eye, yet when you handle a Devon and lift it, you will be surprised at the sturdy, muscular body and the accompanying weight. Devons are virtually nonshedding, thus being hypoallergenic. Many people with allergies to cat hair have found harmony with the Devon. A Devon Rex kitten can moult it‘s coat one or more times during kittenhood. Usually, a kitten born with a nice, curly coat will have a curly coat as an adult, even if it has moulted as a kitten. The character of the Devon Rex is remarkable. They are excellent jumpers, and because of their extremely curious nature, sometimes no shelf is off limits to them! They are a cat with attitude and are not for the faint hearted. Devon Rex are affectionate, adventurous, intelligent (they can be trained to fetch), and very much people orientated. When you relax they often join you choosing a lap for comfort or your shoulder for the view! They wag their tail when happy, purr readily (even when being told off) and are great talkers. If you are looking for a breed of cat that has personality plus, intelligence and dog like devotion, then the Devon Rex is for you. Devon Rex Show Standards (New Zealand) DEVON REX - BREED 32. Challenge Status General Type Standard COAT: Very short and fine, wavy and soft, without guard hairs. Whiskers and eyebrows crinkled, rather coarse and of medium length. All coat colours acceptable. HEAD: Wedge shaped, with face full-cheeked. Short muzzle with strong chin and whisker break. Nose with a strongly marked stop. Forehead curving back to a flat skull. EYES: Wide set, large, oval shaped, and sloping towards the outer edges of the ears. Colour in keeping with the coat colour, or, except in Si-Rex, chartreuse, green or yellow. EARS: Large, set rather low, very wide at the base, tapering to rounded tops, and well covered with fine fur. With or without ear muffs. BODY, LEGS & NECK: Body hard and muscular, slender and of medium length, broad in chest, carried high on long slim legs, with length of hind legs emphasised. Paws small and oval. Neck slender. TAIL: Fine, long and tapering, well covered with short fur.
